Who Can Apply?
Spoonquill is for people who count spoons and write speculative fiction. Please apply if you both:
- Have a chronic illness, particularly one that affects your ability to attend a typical in-person residency.
- Write (or are interested in writing) speculative fiction. For the Spoonquill Spring 2027 cohort, we are focused on speculative fiction, which includes but is not limited to science fiction, fantasy, slipstream, and horror. If you consider your writing to fall under this broad umbrella, please apply.
There is no set level of experience necessary to apply; you can apply if you're unpublished or published, if you're just starting out or if you've won a Hugo. Our goal is to put together a cohesive cohort who will enjoy the program together, which has many factors outside of achievements in the field. Please don't self-reject because of perceived level.
Application Process
The Spoonquill application for the Spring 2027 cohort is now open. Applications close on November 30th at 5pm Pacific.
Final round applicants will be asked for a fifteen minute video or phone call sometime in December or January. This is a quick way for us to get to know you a little better and to ensure that this year's program is a good fit for you.
We intend to tell everyone the final status of their application by the beginning of February.
Spoonquill meets on select Tuesdays of the month from March to May, with the final session on June 1st. Session are held at 10am Pacific for 90 minutes, with a break or two built in. You can see the full schedule here. Sessions are recorded in case of health outages, but live sessions include opportunities not available in the recording. We recommend that you only apply if your schedule (outages aside) accommodates the majority of the sessions.
